About Todd
Todd G. Shipley spent twenty-five years with the Reno, Nevada Police Department, rising from cadet to Senior Detective Sergeant and forming the State of Nevada's first Computer Crimes Investigations Unit. He was the region's subject matter expert in technology crime investigation and computer forensics, and was instrumental in drafting many of Nevada's early cybercrime laws.
After retiring from law enforcement, Todd became Director of Systems Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Training at SEARCH, the National Consortium for Justice Information and Statistics, where he managed a nationwide team of trainers and the National Criminal Justice Computer Laboratory and Training Center. He went on to found Vere Software, where as President he led development of WebCase®, a patented software platform built to help investigators collect legally defensible evidence of online criminal activity.
Today, Todd is President of Dark Intel, Inc., where he researches the dark web and trains investigators around the world in safely and legally navigating it. He also continues active casework as Senior Computer Forensics Examiner. He consults on cyber investigations, cryptocurrency tracing, dark net investigations, and provides expert testimony.
Todd is a retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant and Afghanistan combat veteran. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner, a Certified Forensic Computer Examiner, and a Certified Cyber Crime Investigator, and a two-term Past International President of the High Technology Crime Investigation Association (HTCIA), where he remains a Life Member. He is the featured internet-crime expert in Alex Winter's documentary Deep Web, narrated by Keanu Reeves, and the co-author of two books on cybercrime investigation.
